Entrepreneur Meetup: Garrett Langley of Flock Safety

February 28th, at our Monthly Simply SaaS Meetup, we had the honor of hearing from fellow entrepreneur, Garrett Langley. 7 years in the startup world before starting his own company alongside entrepreneur Matt Feury, Garrett Langley was hustling. From Firethorn, to Experience, to Clutch, then Flock Safety, his story isn’t a small one.
“What’s the biggest problem no one is working on?”
People Will Pay for Safety
“I care most about our customer’s reaction to the product we are selling.”
Hardware is hard. The first thing was figuring out how to get a camera in the field. Flock Safety bought things off the shelf first, to make sure they could do it, before trying to develop custom hardware — a fast iteration cycle. Flock Safety had 10 months of off-the-shelf parts prior to building their own hardware.

Secret Sauce Is in the Computer and Smart Software
Clarity Is Key
“One of the biggest values of Y Combinator is clarity. They really push you to be really clear with what you do. If you can’t explain it to grandparents in 20 words or less, it isn’t clear enough.”

Talk to 100+ Customers a Month
“I work with a few early stage companies in Atlanta and I always ask them ‘how many customer conversations have you had this month?’ If it’s not in the 100’s, I’m like ‘What are you doing?’”
Generally, Garrett believes there should be 2 co-founders: 1 is almost solely focused on sales and the other is solely focused on product.
